The Ultimate Hygge Movie Night-For One
Some movies just need to be watched on one's own. You know the ones I'm talking about; the films that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? These are the pictures that evoke in us, feelings of wistful nostalgia, and transport us into a dreamy, fanciful time and place. They offer us, if only temporary, an emotional and visual escape from this, sometimes monotonous, present-day life.
There is just something so appealing about journeying to this kind of dreamland in solitude.......no husband; no kids; not even the best friend. It's bliss, actually. And, it's one of my favorite ways to practice personal Hygge.
Because my husband occasionally travels for work, it allows me the opportunity, from time to time, to create for myself, a personal hyggeligt movie night. I love to dim the lights, and curl up under a luxurious throw, to watch what I deem, a perfect, cozy movie. I will often light a candle or two, and always, I prepare a special snack to nibble on. A crisp, icy-cold chardonnay, or a bold, rich malbec, will usually round out the perfect, hygge movie night for me.
In case I've inspired you to indulge in a solo hyggeligt movie night yourself, here are my top 20 favorite cozy movies!

Based on L.M. Montgomery's series, these movies are among my all time favorites. I watch them every. single. year. (usually right around Christmas time) and I always watch them alone. I feel like I know these characters, and to be perfectly honest, it almost seems like a family reunion every time we meet. The Amazon link I've included for these movies, is for the collectors set edition (which I own) and includes the the third movie, (although not my favorite) as well.
I would be hard-pressed to choose between these two, and the first two movies I mentioned, as my ultimate favorites. Tom Burlinson is utterly irresistible in his portrayal of Jim Craig, the young mountain man striving to keep his homestead after his father dies in a tragic accident. He falls in love with Jessica, the daughter of a belligerent wealthy land owner, and, well, I don't want to give away the entire plot, so....... Let me just say, I absolutely refuse to let anyone watch this movie with me. It completely deserves my undivided attention.
(I heart Jim Craig.)
5. Ever After
My absolute favorite Cinderella story!
The 2005 version staring Keira Knightly, is just a wonderful adaptation of Jane Austen’s most famous novel. It's definitely one of my go to flicks for a superb, hygge movie night.
This absorbing, heartwarming story follows Frances, recently divorced, who, on a trip to Italy, suddenly finds herself buying a villa. The cinematography and musical soundtrack will capture your heart. Definitely deserving of a glorious, solitary movie night!
I cannot even tell you how much I love this movie! It somehow elicits all the feels; everyone of them; making this an absolute must for the ultimate, hygge movie collection!
9. Little Women
I've loved this movie from the time I was young. Winona Ryder will capture your heart in her portrayal of the spunky, loveable Jo.
Here's the jist of this little known story. A self described, "plain and tall" woman from New England, responds to an advertisement by a Midwestern widower, seeking a bride to help him raise his two children. This story is brilliant! So, so good! I highly recommend adding this your movie collection. What's more, the amazon link is for the boxed trilogy set including, Sarah, Plain And Tall, Skylark, and Winter's End!
I have to say, one of my favorite scenes in this movie is of Marty, weeping on the swing hanging from the big oak tree in the yard. In case you haven't seen the movie, I won't go into the details of why, but suffice it to say, it will grip your heart! I don't like sad movies, and even though I bawl my eyes out every time I watch this scene, it's anabsolutely inspiring movie. The link for this one includes all 8 movies from this Janet Oke series! You'll be in hygge heaven!
12. Eat, Pray, Love
Liz sets out on a journey to discover who she really is. This is really, a lousy description for a most excellent movie. I don't know........ this movie really just makes me want to eat pizza..... really, really good pizza. Please, eat pizza when you watch this movie.
This period drama is absolutely gorgeous. The scenery, the costumes, and the music are just fantastic! Definitely a must watch!
14. Mama Mia
Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth in a musical. Need I say more?
My husband hates this movie. But, in all honesty, I'm totally glad he does because I'd much prefer to watch Robert Redford alone anyway!
16. Ladyhawke
This fantasy film, while not at all like the previous movies I've mentioned, is another favorite, simply for it's uniqueness. Click here for a synopsis of Ladyhawke.
I'll never forget the first time I watched the movie. We were on the ferry to Newfoundland and this was the film they played in the theatre section. I've loved it ever since. This is a great family film, but it also checks the boxes of what I deem to be a perfect hygge flick, too. Click here for a synopsis.
The last three favorites I've included are actually mini-series, and while I've included to link to purchase them, they are all available to watch on Netflix. I highly recommend each of them!
18. Downton Abby
This miniseries is an all time favorite. With the gorgeous clothes, cars, and houses - everything exact to that time period, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this dramatic program. Downton Abbey is a wonderful escape from our frantic, busy lifestyle. A must watch if you haven't seen it!
19. The Paradise
This story tells the tale of a poor, young girl who travels London to seek her fortune, and ends up working in the opulent department store – The Paradise. This period drama is an absolute delight!
Another series based on Janette Oke's books, this tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a teacher who receives her first post in the Western Canadian frontier. So good!
I hope I've given you a few new movies that you can use to create your own, solo, hyggeligt movie night! Let me know if you do, what you watch, and what delicious snack you prefer!
Have you seen all of these hygge movies? Do you have a favorite that you think I would enjoy? I'd love to hear what it is!
