Hygge - Heart And Home
Hygge is as much an expression of your heart, as it is of your home. Perhaps, even more so. Any expression of hygge atmosphere that you strive to create within your home, was first derived from a desire within your heart. This is because, while Hygge is first and foremost, an attitude of contented well being, it is expressed physically in the atmosphere we strive to establish, especially within our homes. Much like simplicity, hygge is an inward reality that results in an outward lifestyle.

I suspect that, much like me, you long for your home to be a place of refuge. And this is as it should be. Your home should be a place where your soul can be rejuvenated from the busyness and noise of the ever moving world. In a chaotic society where we are constantly inundated with a "do more, be more" mentality, we all need a kind of sanctuary to retreat to; where we can simply, be. I would venture to guess that, the vast majority of us, especially women, long to foster this sense of restful content within out homes.
And I want you to know something. This is a good and worthy desire. Never, ever feel guilty about investing into your home. If you're aiming to establish this kind of space in your home, I want to encourage you to aspire towards it. Your desire to invest in your home, to make it beautiful and inviting, is worth working toward. Your time, effort, and money will never be wasted in nurturing a warm and welcoming ambiance in your every day surroundings.
While you don't need to spend vast amounts of money creating this kind of restful content within your home, I would encourage you to budget a little towards it. You can't purchase content, but you can buy practical items that will help you achieve that kind of comfortable presence. But, before you rush out and start buying everything that speaks "cozy" to you, take some time to really contemplate the ambiance you'd like to portray within your home.
I'd suggest clearing one space in your home where you can sit in a calm, serene, and beautiful space.
Remove anything and everything that doesn't belong there and be ruthless about it. Add a few elements to the space that speak hygge to you. I'd suggest a potted plant on a side table close to where you'll sit. I'd also recommend you place a candle there as well. Nothing speaks hygge like a flickering candle. Your goal should be to have one area where you can sit in refuge while you contemplate developing a hygge heart and home.
Purpose to sit in that spot for a little every day. Light the candle, enjoy a cup of coffee and spend some time reflecting on why embracing a heritage of hygge is important to you. Meditate on the reasons why you want to embrace it's welcoming atmosphere into your home, for yourself, for your family, and for your guests. Journaling your thoughts may be very beneficial. As you write out your frustrations, your dreams, and especially, your accomplishments, you will begin to to see a clearer picture of the sanctuary you'd like to establish within your home.
As your ideas begin to take shape in your heart and on the pages of your journal, plan to work within your budget to bring into your home, some of the necessities that will help you achieve your desired ascetic. Keep in mind however, that hygge is not a destination, it is a journey. There is no right or wrong way to approach it. Your expression of hygge should be unique to you, and above all, should reflect the needs of your family and the desires of your heart. Your heart, after all, is your greatest expression of hygge. Everything else is simply a reflection of it.
