The Ultimate Hygge Movie List - For A Cozy Evening At Home
Ready to get your hygge movie watching game on? You've come to the right place because here is an extensive list with a wide variety of the very best, hygge style movies!
Now, let me just say, since hygge is not a "one size fits all" expression, your definition of hygge is going to look a little different than my definition of hygge.
This is how I view hygge; I suspect that, while not exactly the same, you'll have a similar view!
And just as your hygge definition will vary slightly from mine, so too, will your opinion of what constitutes a perfect hygge movie. But even still, I'm confident that in this list, you'll find a good many of these films will fit your idea of a wonderfully cozy kind of movie, as well.
For me, the perfect hygge movie has two aspects.
First, it has to be visually appealing.
I'm not really talking cinematography here though. What I'm looking for in a visually striking movie, is a beautiful set. Especially the nature scenery. One of the biggest components of hygge is nature so it stands to reason that a truly hygge movie will incorporate that on some level.
And second, it must have a feel good aspect to it.
Straight up, you guys? It has to have a happy ending. I do not want to be left at the end of a movie, no matter how good it is, feeling sad. And quite frankly, I don't really want too much angst or drama throughout the film either.
I'm naturally an excessive over-thinker and over-feeler. I'm very empathetic which means I feel other people's feelings on a deep level. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. So when I sit down to watch a hygge movie, I want it to be entertaining. I do not want to be sad, or angry, or disturbed, or dealing with the big emotions of empathy. I deal with that enough on a daily basis. Maybe that makes me weird or overly sentimental but, that's the reality of it. (Someone please tell me you feel the same way because I'm certain I cannot be the only one to feel like this!)
Maybe that's also why I strive so hard to keep my home cozy and tranquil. You can read this post to see
some of the ways I strive to do this. Hygge Décor: 8 Tranquil Ways To Style Your Home
Anyway, I've broken this hygge movie list down into six different categories;
Fantasy/Adventure
Old Fashioned Movies
Comedies
Romance
Musicals
Everything Else (I couldn't think of a better name for this last category. But if you have a suggestion, pop it into the comments! If I like it, I'll edit the category!)
While these awesome movies are in no particular order of which I'd consider most hygge, I have watched each and every one of them, and I firmly affirm the "hyggeness" of each one.
I do have some I especially like though, so I'll highlight those because I'm certain you'll want to watch them if you've not done so yet.
Okay! Here it is!
My list of the very best hygge movies for a perfectly cozy evening!
Fantasy/Adventure Movies
is an American romantic science fiction drama film staring Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, and Ron Livingston. The story follows librarian Henry, who falls in loves with Clare. It would be a typical love story but for the fact that he is plagued with a strange, paranormal genetic disorder that causes him to randomly travel through time.
The Jurassic Park Series (The Box Set)
I love these because the filming is beautiful and the set is gorgeous. It takes you on a wonderful excursion through dinosaur lands from the comfort of your living room. It is fun and fanciful and chock full of excitement! Dinosaur movies are not just for kids, my friends!
2. Jurassic Park (1993)
3. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
4. Jurassic Park 3 (2001)
5. Jurassic World (2015)
6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
7. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
The Chronicles Of Narnia
Here it is in a nutshell; Four siblings accidentally enter a magical land (initially through a magic wardrobe and eventually, through other magic portals) and find themselves coming face to face with the Lion, King Aslan who challenges them to be more than they think they are as they struggle through diverse battles in the land of Narnia. These films are magical. Written by C.S. Lewis, they will capture your heart and make you feel like a kid again. Definitely a few of my favorites!
8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
9. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
10. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Harrison Ford stars as Indiana, a thrill-seeking archeologist and college professor who has a penchant for getting himself into, and out of! wildly dangerous predicaments as he seeks lost treasure. These are perfect for adventure lovers who like to like the comfort of their couch!
11. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
12. Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom
13. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade
(There is actually one more Indiana Jones movie, The Crystal Skull but honestly, I did not care for it so it doesn't make my list. But feel free to check it out if you choose. You might love it!)
The National Treasure Series
This is another treasure hunter series and I love them! Fun and a bit quirky. Nicholas Cage is perfect in his role as Ben Gates.
16. National Treasure 3, Edge Of History
This film follows a romance novelist played by Kathleen Turner who sets out to save her sister from criminals who are holding her for ransom and ends up meeting an American adventurer played by Michael Douglas.
This is my absolute favorite Robin Hood movie. But really though, could there be a better Robin Hood than Kevin Costner? (No. The answer is no.)
20.. The Postman
Another Kevin Costner movie. The filming is wonderful and the story line in this flick is fantastic and futuristic. The Postman actually did not get very good reviews at the box-office but truly, I have no idea why. It's so, so good!
A man and woman get stranded on an island and have to fight off a band of pirates.
22. The Lake House
I LOVE this movie! Wikipedia's description basically sums it up; "A lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside house begins to exchange love letters with its former resident, a frustrated architect. They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late."
22. Xanadu
This movie starring Olivia Newton John got horrible, horrible reviews. It's actually been ages since I've watched it so it's possible that my fanciful memory of it is skewed. But, I loved this movie. Click here to see the plot.
23. Pleasantville
Two ‘90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) get zapped back in time to a black-and-white 1950s world through an old television comedy. Their adventures eventually start to bring colour to the town and the lives of the people around them. Another favorite of mine.
Old Fashioned Movies
Natty Gann is a 12-year-old Depression-era girl whose single father leaves her behind in Chicago while he goes to Washington State to look for work in the timber industry. Natty has a series of adventures and misadventures after she runs away from her mistreating guardian to find her Dad. I. LOVE. THIS. MOVIE.
This is a beautiful, true story about a girl who tries to land a spot as a daredevil who rides horses off of high dives. (It's hard to believe but it's really true!) I don't even want to say anymore about this movie. Please watch this movie. You will be so glad you did!
26. Out Of Africa
Meryl Streep goes to an English colony in Africa and buys 1000 acres to start a coffee plantation. Robert Redford stars alongside her in this absolutely gorgeous film!
27. Far And Away
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in this beautiful film about two Irish immigrants embark on a fortune seeking adventure to America in the 1890s where they eventually take part in the Land Run of 1893. So, so good!
This was the first movie I ever watched alone in a theatre and I have to tell you, I'm so glad I watched it alone. Kevin Costner pulls you in to the screenplay so beautifully, you don't want anyone else around to detract from the experience.
29. Australia
Nicole Kidman as Lady Sarah Ashley, an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station called Faraway Downs after the death of her husband. Hugh Jackman as The Drover, helps her move the cattle across the countryside. This is another favorite.
Okay. This movie just makes it onto my hygge list. It's a bit out of my "happy" qualifications for a hygge movie but, it's just really good. Click here for the plot.
Musicals
This movie is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. It's beautiful and wonderful and so good! A definite classic!
32. Greece
A musical with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Need I say more?
This musical stars Hugh Jackman who plays the visionary Phineas Taylor "P.T." Barnum, who masterminds a show business spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. I like this musical a lot!
34. Mary Poppins
Another classic with a sequel that does not disappoint. This will go down as a forever favorite for me.
Comedies
36. What About Bob
This comedy flick will keep you laughing! Bill Murray plays Bob Wiley, a mentally unstable patient who follows his egotistical psychotherapist Dr. Leo Marvin, (Richard Dreyfuss) on vacation. So funny!
I could have placed this one under the Romantic category but it fits so well here, too. Adam Sandler and Drew Barry will captivate your heart and give you all the feels while keeping you laughing throughout this movie.
38. Three Amigos
Another absolute all time favorite of mine! Martin Short, Chevy Chase, and Steve Martin star in this hilarious movie about three actors who inadvertently find themselves in a real live "western". Just wait till you see the "Singing Bush". (At least I think it's the Singing Bush.) ;)
Romantic

40. Dirty Dancing
A wealthy doctor brings his family to a summer vacation resort. It's a bit of a good girl meets bad boy kind of story except the bad boy is a dancer who happens to be played by Patrick Swayze and really, that's all that needs to be said!
This movie, based on real events, is about a cop named Charlie ( Nicolas Cage ), who orders coffee in a restaurant and doesn't have enough money for a tip. He tells the waitress that if he wins the lottery he will split the winnings with her. You guys. This is such a good movie!

46. Steel Magnolias
This movie is wonderful. And terrible. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry but you'll feel so good after watching it! This cast is absolutely fantastic! Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, and Shirley MacLaine will make you feel like you know them personally and even better, want to spend time with them. And you can!
This wonderful movie, stars Robin Williams, and is set in 1959 at an elite, conservative boarding school, the Welton Academy. It tells the story of an inspiring English teacher who challenges his students to think "outside of the box" through his teaching of poetry.
48. Footloose
A sleepy town where it's pastor has outlawed music and dancing get's a wake-up call when a teen, who moves there with his mother, challenges the rules and falls in love the pastor's daughter. This movie makes me want to dance!
A bunch of high school kids attend a full day of detention on a Saturday. Try as they might, their different societal classes can't seem to keep them from bonding with each other. A lovely, coming of age movie. This movie is filmed inside a high school so there isn't much for nature scenery but, I love it and it's hygge to me so I included it in the list.
Boy loves girl. But girl doesn't know he exists. Boy's best friend (another girl) secretly loves boy but he has no idea because he loves girl who doesn't know he exists; until......
My husband hates this movie. Which is just as well because I'd rather watch it alone! A young girl is in a tragic accident with her horse.
