But Not Today - When You're Feeling Overwhelmed
Her dirty laundry is piled high. Same with the dirty dishes in the sink.
She should get to those things; but not today.
She really should run to the post office
and the grocery store
and the gas station; but, probably not today.
She remembers that she needs to call and pay the electricity bill
and also, return that text to her friend; but, maybe not today.
She had planned on going for a run
and then for coffee with a friend; but no, not today.
Normally she is on top of those things; at least, for the most part; but not today.
Today, she is tired.
Today, she is feeling a little overwhelmed.
So today, she is slowing down.
Today, she will linger on her couch,
with her coffee
and her Bible
and her blanket.
At some point,
she will put down the coffee
and she will put down her Bible,
and she will sleep for a while.
She will go for a walk today,
but she will not count her steps.
She will walk slowly and thoughtfully;
she will stop and smell the roses; she will sit on the bench in the park;
she will listen to the birds.
She will talk to Jesus while she walks; and tell Him about her sorrows;
but she will also tell Him about her joys.
She will remember that she is fearfully and wonderfully made.
She will remember that she is beautiful.
And she will remind herself
that she is a human being,
not a human doing; at least for today.
She will eat that cookie, today; or maybe she will even eat four.
And she will watch her favourite movie;
or read her favourite book.
And today, she will NOT feel guilty about it.
Today, she will give her body, her mind, and her soul, the rest that it needs.
And she will benefit from it.
She will unwind; she will unplug; she will simply be.
And as the day comes to end; she will know that she didn’t waste even a single moment.
She will know that she was productive in a different way.
She met with Jesus; and she enjoyed His creation.
She met with herself, too.
And, she let herself rest; she let herself be.
And she remembered that she likes who Jesus made her to be.
She will sleep tonight, with a peaceful heart.
And tomorrow,
she will wash those dishes;
but not today.
